Irritable bowel syndrome: what is it?

Imagine yourself inside the house whole day long doing a little house work and you’re constipated. Then you decide to go marketing to finish your weekly shopping and now you’ve got diarrhea. Sounds weird? How can a person have constipation and diarrhea at the same time?

Welcome to the world of Irritable bowel syndrome victims! The exact cause of the disease is not known, but suffice to say the disease is extremely annoying (to say the least.) And if we don’t know the cause of the disease, how in the world are you going to treat it?

Some people can have watery stools more than three times a day or less than twice a week (ouch!). Stool can be watery or rock hard (ouch again!) patients may have to strain or have diarrhea, experience a feeling of incomplete evacuation even after passing stool repeatedly. There may be passage of mucus coated stool accompanied with bloating and flatus

So what can you do to control it?There’s no real treatment for the disease as the cause is not known, so most people just judge the symptoms and take the medication accordingly. But recently drug companies have been marketing drugs like Elavil and Paxil which seem to work according to the symptoms. Another tip which Irritable Bowel Syndrome sufferers have learned is, to bulk up their diet with fiber, note down whatever foods they eat and cut out anything which aggravates the Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Some of the most common danger foods are wheat, caffeinated products such as coffee and tea, and citrus fruits.
